Day 01 – Favourite foreign film

Day 02 – A film that is underrated:

Orange County

Orange County came out in 2002, and I thought it was amazing. Coming-of-age stories can be kind of lame, but this one was full of hilarious wit and irony. The main character is a very intelligent teenager who is disillusioned with his dysfunctional family and the superficiality of his community. All he wants to do is get out and go to Stanford uni so that he can be a writer.

The cast in this movie is great. One of the cast is Lily Tomlin, who is one of my favourite actors for pulling off this kind of dry wit. Another member of the cast is Jack Black, who usually drives me up the wall. In this case I think he is OK.

I really don’t understand why people stopped talking about this movie so quickly. It was such an interesting portrayal of teenage life in a very surreal community. My guess is that its release was poorly timed – it came out around the same time the the tv show the O.C. went to air, and so now whenever anyone says “Orange County” they think crappy TV instead of awesome alternative film.

Oh well.
